Activites at Taste of Alaska

Alaska is famous for its outdoor activities: From dog sledding and hiking to snow machining, and spectacular Northern Lights during the winter months. A Taste of Alaska Lodge provides opportunities to enjoy all these activities on our own private property.

A favorite activity for our Winter guests is dog sled rides. Enjoy short rides and one hour dog mushing adventures with Paws for Adventure. These tours are available when the snow flies until the first week of April, and are designed for those who want to experience the thrill of dog-powered transportation in comfort and safety, with an experienced musher on board.  Rides take you uphill, downhill, through the spruce forest, with excitement around every corner. Paws also offers mushing schools and overnight adventures, for guests who want to learn how to drive their own dog team.

Another favorite Alaskan attraction during the Winter is our famous Northern Lights. A Taste of Alaska’s secluded location is perfect for watching the Aurora Borealis without interference from city lights. Enjoy Aurora viewing outdoors in our large hay field.

A Taste of Alaska also offers snowshoes for our guests to use, if they’d like to explore our 280 snowy acres on their own.

During the summer guests may miss out on the Aurora, but they can enjoy the outdoors late into the night thanks to our long daylight hours. Enjoy hiking around the Lodge property, or sitting and relaxing by our pond after dinner.

Initial construction on the pond began in Fall 2002, and finished in May 2003. The original Permalon liner withstood JD 450 tractor tracks, but couldn’t handle Alaskan moose hooves. In May of 2004 the original liner, torn in over 20 places, was removed and replaced with a more durable “shot-creted” finish.

The pond has 50,000 gallons of water circulating at 90 gallons per minute, originally pumped 2000 feet from our natural spring on the lower part of the property. It is a favorite gathering spot for local moose and other wildlife, especially during the Summer months. We keep the pond stocked with goldfish when the weather is warm, and winter the fish indoors.
